75,000
Visitors Make History at Seattle Center Vigil
For five days, over
75,000 visitors left approximately one million flowers at the
Seattle Center Peace Fountain during a memorial flower vigil,
to express sympathy for the families of victims of the September
11th tragedies, to share in our collective grief, and to find
hope in a shattered world.
Originally planned as a three-hour vigil on Saturday September 14, people began
arriving Friday afternoon, and kept coming in such large numbers, Seattle Center
decided to extend the time, resulting in approximately one million flowers
being brought to the Fountain.
In a closing ceremony,
Mayor Paul Schell announced “a plan to plant a garden
at the new Fisher Pavilion at Seattle Center in honor of all
the victims. The new pavilion will be located in the heart
of Seattle Center, facing the International Fountain. It will
be the gathering place where we come together as a varied and
rich community”.
And
What Do You Do With One Million Left-over Flowers?
Several
Interbay gardeners, after taking flowers to the vigil, had
the same idea...the flowers should be returned to the soil.
Seattle Center organizers were very receptive to bringing the
flowers to the Interbay P-Patch for composting. Assistance,
support and needed "brown" materials have come from
other P-patches, the community, Seattle Center, the Zoo, Seattle
Parks Dept, Seattle Public Utilities, and elected officials.
Everyone wants to help. The "community" in community
garden came to the fore.
