The Spanish Revival-style Villa Costella (formerly Spanish Court Apartments) was built in 1929 on the view site formerly owned by George Ritchie Kinnear. The long white building with tropical landscaping and red tile roofs is distinctively different from surrounding structures. The 20 units, averaging 1,000 square feet, have tile floors, electric fireplaces, beamed ceilings, and French doors to view decks. Villa Costella was built and designed by Everett Beardsley. a local developer who specialized in Mediterranean styles. Frederick Anhalt may have participated in the project as well.
Villa Costella is another example of the Queen Anne Historical Society's efforts to preserve local history. In 2010, the Seattle Landmarks Board and the City Council designated this marvelous apartment house a City of Seattle Landmark, largely through the efforts of the Society's Landmark Preservation Committee.
The Villa Costella was designated based on satisfaction of the following standards:
It embodies the distinctive visible characteristics of the Spanish Eclectic architectural style.
It as an outstanding work of its designer, Everett Beardsley.
Because of its prominence, it is an easily identifiable visual feature of its neighborhood and contributes to the distinctive quality of that neighborhood.
